Anita Afriyie to drag MTN to court

Gospel musician, Anita Afriyie’s manager, has indicated that they will use the law courts to address MTN’s “illegal” use of the musician’s song.

According to him, they will not sweep the issue under the carpet, as he feels the telecommunication network is ripping them of millions of cedis, even though no contract was signed between the two parties to grant rights to the use of the artiste’s intellectual property.

Dan Kay, who also doubles as the husband of Anita Afriyie, made the comment in an interview with DJ Premier on Accra100.5FM’s Entertainment Capital programme on Saturday 19 March 2016.

He accused MTN of peddling falsehood, as he indicated that an earlier correspondence from the telecommunication company had said an individual by name Nana negotiated and signed a contract on behalf of the musician.

But he believed the response was a cover-up, as Nana cannot be the name of an individual and he has not been involved in any deal with MTN.

“When MTN replied my lawyer, they stated in the reply that there’s one Nana, who signed the contract on behalf of Anita Afriyie as manager. But you know that my name is not Nana. As a big company like MTN, if someone comes to tell you he’s Nana and that he’s Anita’s manager, so, you went ahead to sign a contract with him, I don’t understand. Nana is not a name. It’s a title. Is it Nana Akwasi, Nana Kwame, or Nana Kofi? MTN is not telling us the truth. It’s a lie. They also said I should go and register with one of their contract providers and come for the rest of our contract money. Meanwhile, I have not signed any contract with anybody. So, from next week, we will meet them in court,” he noted.
