Real Madrid are a club on the slide, despite their win in El Clasico on Saturday night, and the club's hierarchy finally look set to begin something of a revamping of the squad. With that in mind, Manchester United have once again been linked with a move for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Express reported earlier in the week that the Spanish giants could be willing to let the 31-year-old leave for as little (relatively speaking) as £48m, with the player himself said to be actively looking to leave in the summer.
The newspaper now also claim that Ronaldo's contract demands, while high, are set at a level which United wouldn't have to completely break the bank to afford. A figure of £16-20m is currently being thrown around, which would make the Real star the highest earner in the country.
That title currently belongs to
Wayne Rooney, with Ronaldo's former teammate at Old Trafford currently
earning £300,000-a-week. A salary of £16m would put the Portuguese
forward around the same mark, while the higher end of the estimate would
see him making an eye-watering £384,000-a-week.
Despite claims that Ronaldo has slowed from his record-breaking form of previous years, his goalscoring form has still kept him comfortably on top of the pile - scoring more goals in both La Liga and the Champions League this season than any other player, including his great rival Lionel Messi.
The latest nothing for United fans to get themselves too worked up about yet though, with no indications that the two clubs have even begun real talks over a possible Old Trafford return for the three time Ballon d'Or winner.
